How to Remove Stains from Car Upholstery and Carpet

DVX Wild Clean car upholstery and carpet cleaner

To remove stains from car upholstery and carpet, vacuum first, test your cleaner on a hidden area, apply an upholstery cleaner or foam to the stain, agitate it with a soft brush or microfiber cloth and then wipe or extract the loosened dirt before letting the fabric dry. Use a ready-to-use foam for quick spot cleaning on seats and headliners, and a dilutable liquid cleaner for larger areas, carpets and machine extraction.

Why fabric stains are hard to remove

Fabric seats, carpets and floor mats absorb spills from food and drinks, grease from hands and dirt from shoes. Unlike leather or plastic, fabric lets this dirt sink between the fibers, so a quick wipe with a damp cloth often spreads the stain instead of lifting it. Too much water is another problem: it soaks into the padding below and makes drying slow.

The fix is a cleaner made for upholstery, applied in a controlled amount and worked into the fibers so the dirt can be wiped or extracted out. That is why we suggest two options: Fabric Cleaner Foam for fast spot work and Wild Clean - Upholstery Cleaner for deeper cleaning.

What you need

  • A vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool and brush attachment
  • DVX Fabric Cleaner Foam (15 oz) for spot cleaning
  • DVX Wild Clean - Upholstery Cleaner for larger areas, carpets and heavy stains
  • A spray bottle for diluting Wild Clean
  • A soft upholstery brush
  • Several clean microfiber cloths
  • An extraction machine (optional, for carpets and heavily soiled seats)

Step by step: how to remove stains from car upholstery and carpet

  1. Vacuum thoroughly. Remove crumbs, sand and loose dirt from seats, seams, carpets and floor mats. Take the mats out of the car so you can clean them separately.
  2. Test a hidden area. Try your cleaner on a small spot that is not easily seen, such as the side of a seat base, and check the result before cleaning the whole surface.
  3. Choose your cleaner. For a single stain or a quick refresh, use Fabric Cleaner Foam. For whole seats, carpets or heavy soiling, use Wild Clean.
  4. Spot cleaning with foam. Shake Fabric Cleaner Foam well, spray it onto the stained area and let it work briefly. The foam lifts dirt and stains from the fibers without soaking the material.
  5. Deep cleaning with Wild Clean. Dilute Wild Clean 1:1 to 1:3 (product : water) in a spray bottle and mist it evenly over the area. On heavy stains you can apply it directly, undiluted.
  6. Agitate. Work the cleaner into the fabric with a soft brush or a microfiber cloth, using light overlapping strokes from the outside of the stain toward the center so it does not spread.
  7. Wipe or extract. Wipe the loosened dirt away with a clean microfiber cloth, turning it often. If you have an extraction machine, Wild Clean also works with extractors, which pull the dirty solution out of carpets and seats.
  8. Repeat if needed. Stubborn spots may need a second pass. Repeat the same steps rather than scrubbing harder.
  9. Let it dry. Leave the doors or windows open, or park in a ventilated area, until the fabric is fully dry before using the seats or putting the mats back.

Seats, carpets and headliners: what changes?

Fabric seats: Both products are suitable. Start with foam for small spots and switch to Wild Clean for full seats.

Carpets and floor mats: These take the most dirt, so Wild Clean with a brush or an extraction machine is the practical choice.

Headliners: Work gently and use as little product as possible. Apply foam or diluted Wild Clean to a microfiber cloth rather than spraying the headliner directly, then dab and wipe lightly.

Both cleaners can also be used on upholstered furniture at home.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the vacuum. Loose grit turns into mud when it gets wet and makes stains look worse.
  • Soaking the fabric. Too much liquid sinks into the padding and slows drying. Use a controlled amount and wipe or extract it.
  • Scrubbing too hard. Aggressive scrubbing can fuzz the fibers and spread the stain. Let the cleaner work and use gentle strokes.
  • Not testing first. Always check a hidden area before cleaning a whole seat.
  • Using the wrong cleaner for the surface. Upholstery cleaners are for fabric; leather seats need a leather cleaner. See our guide on how to clean leather car seats.
  • Closing the car while it is still damp. Let the fabric dry fully before shutting the doors.
